Luton 'kiss and drop' charge put on hold

Luton Airport has just announced that it is putting on hold the proposed £1 fee that it was planning to charge customers for dropping off passengers at the terminal, which had been dubbed the 'kiss and drop' charge.

The airport had originally been planning to introduce the new charge in April, but it turns out that it has now been put on hold until further notice.

The decision has been welcomed by the Air Transport Users Council, which objects to passengers having to pay more than the cost of their flight for other services provided by the airports.

The £1 fee, although not a huge amount in itself, would have been yet another charge that frustrated customers would have been expected to pay at the airport, on top of the £1 that they are already charged for the clear plastic bags which are used to take cosmetics and other liquids on board the flights.

However, Luton Airport authorities have made it clear that the fee has not been cancelled altogether, but has instead simply been put on hold until further notice, so customers may yet see themselves forking out an extra charge in the future.

A spokesman for the airport told The Telegraph that “there is no fixed date for it” and that passengers will be advised “in due course”. But if the airport does start to charge customers, it will be the first in the UK to do so.

It is becoming increasingly common for airports to charge passengers for a number of little things, and these are starting to add up. However, during the recession airports need to make their money somehow, and these mini charges are one way of increasing profits that it is hard for customers to do much about.

When the £1 'kiss and drop' charge is introduced what provision will be made for wheelchair passengers. That is a passenger in their own wheelchair will find it difficult to negotiate transport from your parking areas

I am appalled that a further charge (which is really an additional tax) is to be (?) charged at the airport to allow customers to pick-up or drop-off passengers who already pay a tax to the airport when they fly. This charge should be dropped altogether but a time limit placed on the drop-off / pick-up waiting of say 15 minutes and a screen indicator placed so that drivers can see the times the the flight they are waiting for and the 'state of play' for their passengers (i.e. where passengers from flights are in relation to the exits).

Is this £1 fee still on hold as my friend went a couple of weeks ago and the traffic was terribal because this fee was now in place?

I have no idea if you are actually charging this amount yet but may I ask if you do to sort out a way for the airport shuttle to make it to the airport reliably and in good time? Perhaps a bus lane?
This past Friday morning the trip from Luton Airport Parkway rail station to the airport took 25 minutes instead of the normal 5 minutes. This, combined with my 05:03 train at Kentish Town coming in at an incorrect platform after rail 'improvement' works overnight meant that I missed the check-in time for my 07:15 flight to Zurich by two minutes and had to wait 10 hours for the next flight.

It is totally chaotic. As you approach the drop-off area, the road signs alternate between telling you that there is a charge for drop-off and that there is not a charge. Then on exit from the drop-off area you are told you must pay £1 (for up to 10 mins), and there is a hopper you must put it in. But I observed that some people (evidently in-the-know) drove up to the barrier and then just waited, putting no money in, and after a short while the barrier opened and let them out anyway. A total mess!

Bunch of highway robbers... how are you supposed to get to the airport? I bet the council has something to do with this.

I've not used the 'kiss and drop' option but have recently driven twice to pick-up and drop off my son for flights. We drove straight into the mid-term car-park and took a ticket. We parked the car and were on a free shuttle bus to the terminal within two minutes. I had up to an hour in the terminal no charge. It's only £2 for two hours anyway. Back on the bus, which run every five or so minutes, in the car and away to the M1 in no time. What's the fuss? Forget the drop off, let the bus take the strain and relax with your friends before your say goodbye.
